By

We’re always on the hunt for the right people who are motivated to grow in their careers and be a part of the fulfilling work we do each and every day to join our tight-knit, family-like atmosphere,

If you’re applying to one of our open careers in ophthalmology, you’re likely wondering how you can stand out from the crowd during the interview process. Let’s take a look at how to nail your job interview with VIP and show us that you have the skills, experience, and traits we look for in members of our team.

How to Stand Out in an Interview for Careers in Ophthalmology

Want to really stand out during your interview with VIP? Here are some tips and tricks:

Show empathy and compassion.

Empathy and compassion are two of the top most important soft skills for healthcare employees. That’s why demonstrating that you possess these qualities is a must in order to stand out during your interview with VIP.

When you’re answering interview questions, always try to highlight the emotional nuances in the experience as well. Is helping others a big part of what attracts you to the role? Don’t be afraid to share that with your interviewer!

Connect with your interviewer.

“Tell me about yourself” is one of the most difficult questions you’re required to answer during a job interview. Make sure you’re crafting a thoughtful response without too many details that don’t really paint a complete picture of who you are.

To connect with your interviewer and create an accurate, complete description of who you are, evaluate your personality traits and connect them to the skill requirements for the role. Consider how your strengths align with our company values. You can even talk with a friend or in the mirror about your traits and how they relate to the role at VIP.

Be a STAR during interviews.

STAR is an interviewing technique that provides a straightforward, structured way of responding to behavior-based interview questions. Using the STAR method during your interview will help you provide more focused, compelling answers to certain questions.

The components of the STAR method are:

  • Situation: Set the scene by providing necessary details relevant to your example.
  • Task: Describe your specific responsibilities in the situation you’re referencing.
  • Action: Explain the exact steps you took to address the situation in question.
  • Result: Share the outcome(s) that your specific actions achieved as a result.

Prepare to show your skills.

In addition to showcasing character traits such as empathy and compassion, you should also be prepared to refer to past experiences that showcase soft skills such as stress management, teamwork, communication, and work ethic.

Providing solid examples that highlight these skills will really help you stand out next to other job candidates. Wondering why, exactly? While on-the-job training can help you learn certain core competencies for your career in ophthalmology, soft skills are not as easily learned and improved, but they’re just as—if not more—important.

Ask thoughtful questions.

At the end of your interview, you’re most likely going to be asked what questions you have for the interviewer. Remember, the interview process isn’t just to make sure that you’re a good fit for VIP—it’s just as much to make sure that VIP is a good fit for you!

It’s important to come prepared and show that you’ve done your homework by asking plenty of thoughtful questions. When you’re coming up with your list of things to ask, draft extra questions in case some of yours are addressed throughout the interview process. To help generate your questions, think about what you are curious about when it comes to VIP that you couldn’t find on the website or in the FAQ guide.
